The road from Kandy into the tea highlands is one of the island’s most beautiful drives – the estates begin properly above Ramboda and don’t stop until Nuwara Eliya. A stop at a working tea estate gives you the full picture from plucking row to tasting room. The colonial hill station itself – Victorian post office, racecourse, the particular cool air at 1,868 metres – is unlike anywhere else in South Asia.

Board at Nanu Oya and let Sri Lanka’s highland railway do what it does: three and a half hours through tea valleys, cascading waterfalls, cloud forest and misty ridges with the carriage doors open and the scenery falling away on both sides. A morning climb of Sigiriya Rock Fortress – the frescoes, the mirror wall and the summit panorama at first light. In the afternoon, the hike up Pidurangala Rock gives something most Sigiriya visitors miss: the view of Sigiriya itself, rising from the forest below, at the hour when the light is best. Less crowded, shorter climb, completely different perspective.

The drive south passes through Dambulla – five ancient cave shrines whose painted ceilings and gilded statues reward genuine attention rather than a hurried walk-through. An evening stroll along Kandy Lake as the city lights reflect across the water brings the day to a natural close.

The highland railway from Kandy to Ella is three and a half hours of tea estate panoramas, mountain tunnels, cascading waterfalls and the carriage doors permanently open to the view.
