ITINERARY

Day by Day

Day

01

Arrival - Negombo

Your private vehicle meets you at the airport for the transfer to Negombo. A welcome walk along the lagoon as the evening comes on, street food from the stalls along the waterfront, and an early rest before the journey begins properly tomorrow.

Day

02

Negombo to Minneriya / Habarana

The drive northeast takes around three hours, arriving at Habarana in time for the afternoon elephant gathering safari at Minneriya National Park. Between July and October, hundreds of wild Asian elephants converge on the ancient reservoir as its water levels drop – one of Asia’s great wildlife spectacles, and one of the finest photography opportunities in Sri Lanka. Golden-hour light across the lake edge.

Day

03

Sigiriya - Rock Fortress & Pidurangala

A morning climb of Sigiriya Rock Fortress – the frescoes, the mirror wall and the summit panorama at first light. In the afternoon, the hike up Pidurangala Rock gives something most Sigiriya visitors miss: the view of Sigiriya itself, rising from the forest below, at the hour when the light is best. Less crowded, shorter climb, completely different perspective.

Day

04

Sigiriya to Kandy via Dambulla

The drive south passes through Dambulla – five ancient cave shrines whose painted ceilings and gilded statues reward genuine attention rather than a hurried walk-through. An evening stroll along Kandy Lake as the city lights reflect across the water brings the day to a natural close.

Day

05

Kandy to Ella - Scenic Train

The highland railway from Kandy to Ella is three and a half hours of tea estate panoramas, mountain tunnels, cascading waterfalls and the carriage doors permanently open to the view. Reserved seats, arranged in advance, on the correct side. Arrive in Ella in the afternoon and let the village pace take over.

Day

06

Ella - Little Adam's Peak & Tea Estates

A morning hike to Little Adam’s Peak through a working estate – the trail, the tea pickers at work and the Ella Gap view from the summit ridge. The Nine Arch Bridge mid-morning, timed to a train crossing. An optional afternoon tea tasting or a walk down to Ravana Falls, depending on the pace you prefer.

Day

07

Ella to Arugam Bay

The drive east via Monaragala takes around four hours – a long transfer that is worth it. A stop for a traditional Sri Lankan lunch at a rural village along the way breaks the journey naturally. Arrive in Arugam Bay in the afternoon for an evening surf orientation or a walk along the beach as the sun drops into the treeline.

Day

08

Arugam Bay - Surf & Pottuvil Lagoon

A full surf day at Main Point – a long, consistent right-hander that works for beginners and rewards the more experienced. In the afternoon, a boat trip on Pottuvil Lagoon looks for crocodiles, monitor lizards and kingfishers in the mangrove channels. The sunset light along the east coast is a different quality to the south – worth setting up for.

Day

09

Arugam Bay to Yala / Kumana

The drive to Yala or Kumana takes between one and a half and three hours depending on the route chosen. An afternoon jeep safari introduces the park: the dry scrub terrain, the coastal lagoon habitats and – if the timing is right – a first leopard or elephant sighting in the late afternoon light.

Day

10

Yala - Full Safari Day

Dawn and afternoon drives in Block 1. A specialist tracker alongside a private jeep, the gate opening at first light, and a full day in the finest leopard habitat on earth. Optional forest walk along trails inside the park. Sunset photography at the coastal lagoons where flamingos and painted storks gather.

Day

11

Yala to Mirissa

The drive west takes around two hours. An optional detour to Udawalawe National Park adds an encounter with open-terrain elephant herds – a completely different visual to the scrub habitat of Yala, and worth the addition for wildlife photographers. Afternoon leisure on the beach at Mirissa.

Day

12

Mirissa - Whale Watching & Departure

Between November and April, a pre-dawn boat departure from Mirissa harbour into the deep-water channel where Sri Lanka’s blue whale migration corridor runs. On a good morning – a blue whale surfacing. Sperm whales and spinner dolphin pods are regular company. A final seafood dinner before the evening transfer to Colombo for next-day departure.
