Pidurangala Rock is 20 minutes’ walk from Sigiriya and offers the view most photographers actually want – Sigiriya Rock itself rising above the jungle, best at sunrise when the light catches the rock face. Less crowded than Sigiriya, shorter climb, no entrance fee. The ancient rock temple at the base is interesting in its own right. Frequently recommended by guides when asked what they’d do if they had the morning free.
