Most visitors cycle through the archaeological site and leave. The Parakrama Samudra reservoir – built in the 12th century and still functioning – surrounds the city on three sides. An evening bicycle circuit along its edge, with fishermen on the water and dagoba silhouettes on the far bank, is a different experience to the monuments. Adds around one hour to any Polonnaruwa day.
