ITINERARY

Day by Day

Day

01

Arrival - Negombo

A private airport transfer to Negombo. An evening stroll along the lagoon, a fresh seafood dinner and a brief cultural orientation with your guide – the right way to begin a journey that will take you deep into the island’s heritage.

Day

02

Negombo to Sigiriya via Ritigala

The drive northeast includes a detour to Ritigala Forest Monastery – one of Sri Lanka’s most atmospheric and least-visited ancient sites. Hidden in a protected nature reserve, its stone meditation platforms, raised walkways and bathing pools emerge from the forest in a landscape of genuine wildness. Arriving at your Sigiriya resort by late afternoon, the surrounding jungle settles into dusk around you.

Day

03

Sigiriya - Rock Fortress & Village Immersion

A sunrise climb of Sigiriya Rock Fortress: the frescoes, the Mirror Wall inscriptions and the panoramic view across the Cultural Triangle plains from the summit. An afternoon village immersion – pottery making and a traditional Sri Lankan meal – brings the human scale of the landscape into focus. An optional elephant safari at Minneriya for sunset photography closes the day with a different kind of spectacle.

Day

04

Polonnaruwa - Cycling & Minneriya Safari

A full-day excursion to Polonnaruwa Ancient City by bicycle – the royal palace ruins, the sacred quadrangle, the extraordinary Gal Vihara rock temple with its colossal carved Buddhas, all navigated at the right pace with a specialist heritage guide. An afternoon jeep safari in Minneriya National Park captures elephant herds gathering at the reservoir as the light softens.

Day

05

Sigiriya to Kandy via Dambulla

The drive south passes through Dambulla Cave Temple – five rock-hewn shrines with vivid murals and reclining Buddhas in states of extraordinary preservation. A visit to the Matale spice garden adds a hands-on culinary dimension before arrival in Kandy. An evening walk around Kandy Lake and optional market exploration.

Day

06

Kandy - Tooth Relic, Crafts & Cultural Evening

A morning guided visit to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic – Sri Lanka’s most venerated Buddhist site. A private traditional Kandyan mask-painting workshop with a working craftsperson. Afternoon high tea at an estate-view café and a colonial street walk. The evening cultural dance and drumming performance closes the day with fire, rhythm and elaborate ceremony.

Day

07

Kandy to Nuwara Eliya - Tea Estates

The mountain drive from Kandy takes around two and a half hours through the tea estate landscape. A tea plantation tour with leaf-to-cup tasting and a look at the colonial-era factory machinery. An afternoon walk around Gregory Lake, optional pedal boats, and a visit to the Nuwara Eliya post office – a Victorian building still in operation and genuinely worth the stop.

Day

08

Scenic Train - Nanu Oya to Ella

The highland railway from Nanu Oya to Ella – three and a half hours of misty highlands, cascading waterfalls and tea-estate terraces seen through open carriage doors. Reserved seats, correct side of the train, arranged in advance. Arrive in Ella, settle in and explore the town’s café culture at your own pace.

Day

09

Ella - Little Adam's Peak & Nine Arch Bridge

A morning hike to Little Adam’s Peak through the tea estate trail, followed by the Nine Arch Bridge with its timing checked the night before. An optional afternoon at Ravana Falls or a tea estate walk. The evening is yours – the lodge terrace at sunset is one of Ella’s great simple pleasures.

Day

10

Ella to Yala

The drive via Wellawaya takes three to three and a half hours, the landscape shifting from highland green to dry-zone scrub. An optional stop at a local village for a traditional lunch and handicraft demonstration. An afternoon jeep safari into Yala Block 1 – leopards, elephants and marsh birds in the late afternoon light. An evening bush walk with a naturalist for nocturnal wildlife.

Day

11

Yala - Full Safari Day

Two drives: pre-dawn and afternoon. A full day in the finest leopard habitat on earth, with a private jeep, a specialist tracker and the unhurried approach that makes the difference between a good safari and one you talk about for years. A picnic by a waterhole. Wildlife photography guidance and observation of predator-prey interactions in the afternoon.

Day

12

Yala to Galle - Fort Heritage

The coastal drive west takes around two and a half hours. An afternoon exploring Galle Fort – the Dutch Reformed Church, the lighthouse, the ramparts above the Indian Ocean and the boutique galleries and independent shops that have established themselves within the old walls. An optional afternoon at the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Centre.

Day

13

Galle to Colombo - Departure

A final morning at leisure in Galle Fort – the rampart walk in early morning light, a last coffee in the fort lanes. The expressway drive north to Colombo with an optional shopping stop. Airport transfer and departure.
